Brazil is the source of this oval-shaped, intensely blue Swiss topaz, which measures 7.00x5.00 mm by 7.10x5.00 mm. There are no obvious inclusions in the stone, which weighs between 0.85 and 1.00 carats and has good clarity. Treated to enhance its color and clarity, it presents an intense blue color. Ideal for creating fine jewelry.
Topaz, also known as the "Saxon diamond" (from the Saxons) with an orthorhombic crystal system, is a mineral from the category of precious stones with the chemical composition Al2SiO4(OH, F)2. The hydroxyl ions (-OH) can combine with different concentrations of fluoride, which determines the large number of topaz varieties. Topaz changes color to become brown-green or reddish through gamma ray irradiation, electron bombardment, or heating.
Although it has a hardness of 8, it has good cleavage (splits easily), which makes its processing difficult. It is found in the characteristic prismatic crystallization form or as a granular mass. It is frequently associated with beryl, tourmaline, and apatite in an acidic magmatic rock of granite or pegmatite, and can also be found in metamorphic rocks such as gneisses (Brazil). Other places where topazes have been discovered include the Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Mexico, USA, Sri Lanka, Burma, and Pakistan. In the past, topazes were found in Germany, Saxony on the Snail Mountain in Vogtland, from where polished topazes from the time of Augustus the Strong originate, which are now kept in the "Green Vault" in Dresden and by the English crown.
Swiss Blue Topaz is obtained by treating white topaz, it does not exist in nature in the form in which it is known. All varieties of blue topaz are obtained through the technical processing procedure of white topaz.
