Citrine is a variety of quartz whose color ranges from pale yellow to brown due to a submicroscopic distribution of colloidal ferric hydroxide impurities. Brazil is the largest producer of citrine, with a large part of its production coming from the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The name is derived from the Latin word citrina which means 'yellow' and is also the origin of the word 'lemon'. Sometimes citrine and amethyst can be found together in the same crystal, which is then called amethyst. Citrine was first appreciated as a gemstone in Greece between 300 and 150 BC, during the Hellenistic era.

Madeira Citrine is notable for its warm and vibrant colour hue, resembling the golden tones of a sunset in the region of Madeira, a Portuguese island in the North Atlantic. Here is a more detailed description:

1. **Color:** Madeira Citrine is characterized by warm shades of golden yellow to deeper, orange-gold-like tones. This warm, bright colour is one of the defining characteristics of Madeira citrine.

2. **Transparency:** Citrine is generally a transparent semi-precious stone, allowing light to penetrate and create a beautiful play of colours in the stone.

3. **Hardness:** Citrine has considerable hardness on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for use in jewellery.

4. **Lapidity:** It is often worked by cutting to bring out its brilliance and warm colours. Popular cuts include oval, round and pear-shaped.

5. **Origin:** The name "Madeira" is added to indicate that the stone has its colour associated with that of Madeira wine.

6. **Use in jewellery:** Madeira Citrine is particularly valued for fine jewellery, including rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Its warm colour and brilliance make it a popular choice in jewellery design.

7. **Symbolism:** Citrine is often associated with positive energy, good luck and vitality, making it a popular choice for people looking for stones with spiritual meanings.
