Citrine is a variety of quartz whose color ranges from pale yellow to brown due to a submicroscopic distribution of colloidal ferric hydroxide impurities. Brazil is the largest producer of citrine, with a large part of its production coming from the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The name is derived from the Latin word citrina, which means 'yellow' and is also the origin of the word 'lemon'. Sometimes citrine and amethyst can be found together in the same crystal, which is then called amethyst. Citrine was first appreciated as a gemstone in Greece between 300 and 150 BC, during the Hellenistic era. Madeira Citrine is notable for its warm and vibrant colour hue, resembling the golden tones of a sunset in the region of Madeira, a Portuguese island in the North Atlantic.
